10 Spa Escapes in the Scottish Highlands

From sea-view hot tubs to spring-fed Victorian pools, the Highlands are made for slowing down. This guide compares ten spa escapes across the region, from our own riverside spa hotel in the Scottish Highlands in the heart of Inverness to castle, island, coastal and mountain retreats. We are upfront about it: one Inverness hotel (ours) and nine favourites further afield, grouped by the kind of trip you have in mind, with every facility checked in October 2026.

Quick Answer

The best Highland spa escape depends on the trip. Choose Inverness for an easy-to-reach city base with day trips and spa evenings, a castle or country house for a luxury weekend, the coast for sea air and outdoor hot tubs, or the mountains for walking by day and a sauna by night.

Before you choose

What Makes a Great Highland Spa Hotel?

Not every hotel with “spa” in its name offers the same experience. Before you book, check these six things. We have used them to compare every hotel in this guide.

  • Water you can swim in: a pool long enough for lengths, not just a plunge pool.
  • Heat: a sauna, a steam room and ideally a jacuzzi or hot tub to warm up after a day outdoors.
  • Treatments with recognised brands, bookable before you arrive.
  • Facilities included for residents, not charged as extras on top of your room.
  • A location that suits your trip: somewhere you can walk from, or a base for day trips.
  • Good food on site, so you do not have to go back out after an evening in the spa.

Why Inverness Works as a Spa Base

Most Highland spa hotels are a long drive from each other and from the places you want to see. Staying in Inverness means one check-in and a different day out each morning: Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle, the Black Isle, Culloden and Clava Cairns, or Aviemore and the Cairngorms. Then come back to the pool, the steam room and dinner by the River Ness.

Two of the escapes in this guide are within easy day-trip reach too: Nairn is 15 miles east along the coast, and Aviemore is a straightforward drive down the A9. For more ideas, see our local’s guide to day trips from Inverness.

Book treatments when you book your room

Treatments are popular at weekends and in school holidays. Reserve your Pretty Woman Spa appointment at the same time as your stay so you get the time you want.

Planning

Planning Your Highland Spa Break

  • Season: winter brings cosy evenings and quiet trails, spring brings wildlife, summer gives long light evenings and autumn has golden hillsides.
  • Travel: Inverness has a mainline railway station and an airport. If you are driving between spa hotels, allow plenty of time for Highland roads.
  • Residents or day visitors: check what is included. Some pools are for residents only; at Inverness Palace, day visitors book a spa day instead.
  • Electric cars: Inverness Palace Hotel & Spa has six charging points and a free car park, subject to availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Highland spa hotels have outdoor hot tubs?

Fonab Castle in Pitlochry, Golf View in Nairn and the Isle of Mull Hotel all have outdoor hot tubs, and some suites on the Isle of Eriska have their own. In Inverness, the Palace Leisure Club has an indoor jacuzzi beside the pool.

Can day visitors use the pool at Inverness Palace Hotel & Spa?

The Leisure Club is for hotel guests and members, so there are no day passes. Non-residents can book a Pretty Woman Spa day instead, which includes use of the spa facilities, from £77 per person.

Which Highland spa hotel is easiest to reach without a car?

Inverness. The railway station is in the city centre and Inverness Airport is close by, and Inverness Palace Hotel & Spa is a short taxi ride from both.

Do I need to book spa treatments in advance?

Yes, almost everywhere, and especially at weekends and in school holidays. At Inverness Palace Hotel & Spa all Pretty Woman Spa appointments must be booked in advance.

What is the best time of year for a Highland spa break?

Any time. Winter is cosy and quiet, spring brings wildlife and longer days, summer has the most daylight for exploring and autumn is beautiful for walks. Book early for summer and the festive season.

Can I combine spa time with sightseeing?

Yes, and that is where a city base helps. From Inverness you can visit Loch Ness, the Black Isle or the Cairngorms by day and be back for a swim, sauna and dinner by the river.
